Social Capital

Editor's Note

Welcome to the latest edition of the Social Capital Newsletter. Social Capital is an intangible asset at the heart of a new and dynamic view of success, one that is changing business and the world as we know it. In the not-so-distant past, many leaders thought of business as "war"--a war for customers, talent, new markets, you name it--and the take-no-prisoners mindset permeated many office cultures. But in the Social Capital world, that combative approach is a sad old relic of the bad old days of business. As IBT Times Editor-At-Large Chris Benguhe and Assistant Editor RaeAnne Marsh explore in "The Empowerment Principle," CEOs in the vanguard of conscious leadership are cultivating the lasting power that comes from helping others achieve their potential. Read on for insights from companies such as Delta, Kendra Scott, BloomTech and more.

THE BUSINESS OPTIMIZER

Investing in employee happiness is more important than ever according to new Gallup research. Although engagement was climbing in the years leading up to the pandemic, it plunged to 32% in 2022, down from 36% in 2020. Young workers were the most disengaged, with many feeling unheard and uncared for. For ideas on how to build employee happiness, check out our video interview with Gallup CEO Jon Clifton at "Gallup Knows Why Your Employees – And Everyone Else – Is Unhappy."

Social Capital in Action

Valentine's Day is coming up this month, and it's a good reminder of the importance of bringing love to all of our interactions. Alan Mulally, who turned around Ford Motor, is a big believer, as you'll read in "Alan Mulally Says All You Need Is Love--And A Great System." As he told us, wisdom and caring were abundant in his home while growing up, and he built on that foundation to create culture of "love by design." If you'd like to bring more love to your workplace, here's your chance to learn from a master.
