Editor's Note

Welcome to the latest edition of the Social Capital Newsletter. Social Capital is an intangible asset at the heart of a new and dynamic view of success, one that is changing business and the world as we know it during one of the most difficult and turbulent times in recent history. If you're looking to embrace the Social Capital movement in your own company, be sure to check out "Improving Lives And The Bottom Line," where we reveal our Editors' Picks 2022. This is a compendium of the most important ideas of the Social Capital movement, pioneered by companies like Barry-Wehmiller, Chipotle, Delta, Discover and UKG. These organizations embody the spirit captured by Adam Smith, often called the Father of Capitalism. Smith laid out the rationale for building an economic system in an ethical way, one that is about caring for others. If you're looking for powerful inspiration to continue building on your own efforts to make a difference, look no further. And if you missed our video interviews with Chipotle CEO Brian Niccol, check out, "Chipotle's Amazing Recipe for a Better World (Part I)" and "Chipotle's Amazing Recipe for a Better World (Part II)." We're certain they'll leave you feeling positive about the future of business.

Everybody Matters: The Extraordinary Power of Caring for Your People Like Family by Bob Chapman and Raj Sisodia

As Social Capital CEO Bob Chapman sees it, "Leadership is the stewardship of the lives entrusted to you, to bring out the best in the people we have the privilege of leading. Management is the manipulation of others for your success." His beliefs led him to create Truly Human Leadership, a people-centric approach that lets team members know they are valued, cared for and a truly integral part of a company's purpose. He implemented Truly Human Leadership as the head of Barry-Wehmiller, a capital equipment and engineering consulting firm. He shares his experiences in cultural transformation in his Wall Street Journal best seller Everybody Matters: The Extraordinary Power of Caring for Your People Like Family, written with Raj Sisodia. For more on Chapman's ideas, check out "Bob Chapman Builds Colossal Success On Simple Premise: Treat People With Respect."

Splurge

Autumn is upon us, and if you relish the annual ritual of getting outside and clearing the falling leaves yourself, you'll need the right tools. That starts with your rake. The Leonard American-Made Steel Landscape Rake With American Ash Handle ($59.99) is designed to tackle heavy-duty jobs, with a "bombproof" handle connection designed to keep the rake from snapping under the weight of heavy, wet leaves. You can also use it for backfilling, cultivating and breaking up soil. Even better, if you're tired of the noise of your leaf blower or live in a town that has banned them, this will make it easy to leave those noisy, environmentally-unfriendly nuisances behind. It's all part of building a more sustainable, human-friendly world. You can read about the ideas of Social Capital CEO Davis Smith at the outdoor gear company Cotopaxi--a leader in sustainability--in "Can Corporations End World Poverty?"

Coming Up

A Deep Dive with Fabian Cousteau: He gives us a close-up look at his plans for an underwater lab modeled on the international space station. His goal: Creating a sustainable for-profit model to fund scientific research with sponsorships from branded corporations. (For a look at how one Pharma company embraced Social Capital ideals, see "Lose The Sale, Not Your Integrity").

THE BUSINESS OPTIMIZER

While 71% of Americans support labor unions--the highest level since 1965--58% of non-union workers don't want to join a union, according to recent Gallup research. Maybe that's because more of the non-union workers feel engaged at work. Only 27% of union members are engaged, compared to 33% of non-union members. With Social Capital principles catching on, it seems more companies are doing their best to be employee-friendly, reducing the need for unionization among their teams. Social Capital in Action

Bob Chapman, CEO of Barry-Wehmiller, will be sharing his ideas for using Truly Human Leadership to transform institutions with both the U.N. and the Vatican at the Human Flourishing Forum on Nov. 3-4. Achieving systemic transformation isn't easy, but it's necessary if you want to change the world, as the Social Capital CEO explains in a recent blog post. One goal is to support the U.N.'s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SDGs have given institutions guidelines on what they can do to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that by 2030 that people around the world can live in peace and prosperity. Lofty, yes, but if leaders commit to making change in scalable ways, Chapman believes big results are possible. Check out "The Secret To Becoming A Caring Leader" for ideas on how you can build a platform to change the world in your own organization.
