Social Capital

Editor's Note

Welcome to the latest edition of the Social Capital Newsletter. Social Capital is an intangible asset at the heart of a new and dynamic view of success, one that is changing business and the world as we know it during one of the most difficult and turbulent times in recent history. Few problems are as intractable as poverty, and few organizations have as much potential to help solve it as Social Capital companies. In "This CEO Is Leading the Charge to End Poverty," Davis Smith, CEO of the outdoor-gear company Cotopaxi, reveals how his team has successfully partnered with Mercy Corps, which is helping Venezuelan refugees regain stability as they've fled the country during its humanitarian crisis. It's just one example of the steps the company took to aid 1 million people in 2021 with targeted, traceable grants, through collaboration with partner organizations. If you're looking for ideas for how your own organization can bring about meaningful change, you won't want to miss this week's lead story.

Triggers: Creating Behavior That Lasts--Becoming The Person You Want To Be

If you're looking to evolve into a new and improved version of yourself as a leader, Marshall Goldsmith is ready to help. In his classic book Triggers, he explores how unappreciated triggers in the environment can derail our performance and shows how to escape their impact. One key is daily self-monitoring and asking ourselves active questions to measure our own effort, not results. Our guess is that once you read this book, you'll be hankering for more of Goldsmith's timeless wisdom. Don't miss our story "Marshall Goldsmith Shows Us How To Increase Value By "Giving It Away." His ideas sync up beautifully with the ideals of the Social Capital movement.

Splurge

There's no time like the summer of 2022 to get out of the house and enjoy nature in all of its splendor. Highlander, a global backpacking organization, is making that idea very appealing. The group is bringing its outdoor adventures to the U.S. for the first time with an excursion at Big Bear Lake, California, from September 27 to October 10 ($549). Don't have the latest gear? Social Capital company Cotopaxi is a great place to start your search for backpacks, coolers and more.

Coming Up

Marshall Goldsmith discusses how to ditch the imaginary obstacles that are keeping you from living a fulfilling life in an interview on his new book The Earned Life.

THE BUSINESS OPTIMIZER

One of the biggest knock-on effects of the pandemic has been empty store shelves. That could be changing, with Reuters reporting that business inventories--a key component of gross domestic product--increased strongly in May. Business inventories rose 1.4% after climbing 1.3% in April. That's good news for both the retail industry and consumers.

Social Capital in Action

Mothers bore much of the brunt of pandemic stress, and many left their jobs to tend to family responsibilities during the Great Resignation. That trend has driven many Social Capital CEOs to re-examine their cultures to make sure they are places that women want to work and can thrive. If you're interested in attracting and retaining more moms at your company, be sure to read "Jill Koziol and Motherly Celebrate All Moms As - Gasp - Successful Women" and "Liz Tenety Gives Motherhood a Platform for Change."
