Editor's Note
Welcome to the latest edition of the Social Capital Newsletter. Social Capital is an intangible asset at the heart of a new and dynamic view of success, one that is changing business and the world as we know it during one of the most difficult and turbulent times in recent history. Roger Hochschild, CEO and president of the financial services firm Discover, found that one way to do this is via decisions about where to locate the company's offices and call centers, as we explore in "Discover Is Lifting Up An Entire Community in Southside Chicago" and the accompanying video interview with IBT Editor at Large Chris Benguhe. Hochschild, the embodiment of a Social Capital CEO, found that by putting down roots in the underserved community of Chatham, Ill., Discover was made a difference in the local economy while maintaining a strong labor force. The facility had lower turnover than other call centers and faster speed-to-proficiency for agents, as well as notable customer satisfaction. "We don't see a difference between doing the right thing and what's right for the business," says Hochschild. That's the spirit that is helping Social Capital CEOs change the world.

The Earned Life: Lose Regret, Choose Fulfillment
Aligning the choices you make and risks you take everyday with your purpose is the foundation of living a meaningful life. The tricky part comes when those decisions don't bring the results you want, because of unexpected circumstances. In The Earned Life, Marshall Goldsmith, a well-known career coach to some of the highest achievers in the world, shows how connecting your activities to a higher aspiration can help you achieve a no-regrets life. Tapping into the teachings of Buddhism, he offers a route out of the Western mindset of putting off happiness until all of the stars align. And if you can't get enough of Goldsmith's ideas, check out "Marshall Goldsmith Shows Us How To Increase Value By 'Giving It Away.'"

If you're a big believer in digital detox, you're in good company. Social Capital CEO Brian Scudamore, founder of 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, is a big advocate of "going dark" on vacation and even has his staff change his passwords so he can't get into his accounts. The hospitality industry is embracing the trend. Nayara Springs, a resort in Costa Rica, offers a three-day Digital Detox package, in which the hotel confiscates your phone and laptop on arrival, and you can spend your days watching tropical birds, doing yoga and relaxing by the pool. Even if a colleague ignores your auto-responder message about being away with no access to email, you'll be powerless to reply. What's not to like?

THE BUSINESS OPTIMIZER
The top three reasons workers are feeling burned out are increased workloads (54%), stagnant wages/salary (47%) and staff/employee shortages (41%), according to a new survey by SimpleTexting. And, not surprisingly, more than 1/3 of respondents admitted that they think of quitting their job once a week or more. Data like this underlines why the Social Capital approach to running a company is a powerful antidote to the Great Resignation. Employees who know their employer cares about their mental health, financial wellness, and happiness at work have no reason to fantasize about interviewing with the company down the street.
