Social Capital

Editor's Note

Welcome to the latest edition of the Social Capital Newsletter. Social Capital is an intangible asset at the heart of a new and dynamic view of success, one that is changing business and the world as we know it during one of the most difficult and turbulent times in recent history. Automaker Henry Ford understood that paying his team well wasn't just the right thing to do: It would ultimately help them to become Ford customers and to contribute to their local economies. Unfortunately, many employers now look at payroll as a cost, not an investment, and, when it's time to make cuts, turn to salaries and benefits first. In "CEOs Who Share the Wealth," IBT Editor At Large Chris Benguhe and Assistant Editor RaeAnne Marsh go deep with CEOs who've bet on the efficiency wage theory, which embraces the idea that higher wages pay for themselves and then some. You'll hear from leaders like Social Capital CEOs Sara Blakely (Spanx), Joth Ricci (Dutch Bros.) and Hamdi Ulukaya (Chobani), who are changing the business world one Social Capital idea at a time.

THE BUSINESS OPTIMIZER

The top traits that Gen Z workers value in employers are empathy and honesty, according to a new survey by TalentLMS, a learning management system. The Gen Z in the Workplace Survey also found that U.S. employees ages 19 to 25 prioritize mental health. 82% say it's important to have mental health days, and half want mental health training.

Social Capital in Action

Austin Allred's mission is to make tech jobs accessible to people of every background. That's a tall order, given the high cost of college education--an insurmountable barrier to entry for many potential students. But Allred is determined to make a difference, and his Social Capital company, BloomTech Education, enables students to get the training to be software engineers with $0 in tuition up front. Once they graduate, they pay it back after getting a job. Higher education will never be the same.
