Social Capital

Editor's Note

Welcome to this week's edition of the Social Capital Newsletter. Social Capital is an intangible asset at the heart of a new and dynamic view of success, one that is changing business and the world as we know it during one of the most difficult and turbulent times in recent history. It's a mindset Grokker founder Lorna Borenstein embodies. Her company helps companies like Delta put employee's wellbeing front-and-center, offering an arsenal of videos on everything from yoga to healthy cooking to help them stay healthy and fit. Borenstein is in the vanguard of leaders in the compassionate capitalism movement who are embracing wellness. It's a forward-thinking group that includes Kirsten Saenz Tobey, co-founder and chief impact officer of Revolution Foods, which is bringing fresh, healthy fare to schools; Davis Smith, founder & CEO of humanitarian outdoor gear brand Cotopaxi and Modern Health CEO and founder Alyson Watson, a leader in mental health care. Here's the latest on the Social Capital CEOs and companies who are shaking up the business world as we know it with their unique, people-first philosophies.

'Well-Being Is Having Its Moment!'

Elevate: Push Beyond Your Limits and Unlock Success in Yourself and Others

It's one thing to find the inner drive to achieve your biggest goals. As a Social Capital CEO, knowing how to do that for others is just as important. When you can bring out their best talents, skills and ideas of everyone on your team, your company will be unstoppable, not just in meeting its KPIs but in its contributions to everyone in its orbit. In Elevate, serial marketing entrepreneur Robert Glazer shares the strategies that have helped his award-winning teams outperform expectations while his companies have racked up accolades for creating great, employee-friendly workplaces and amazing cultures.

Splurge

Huckberry's American Mountains Whiskey glasses ($65) celebrate the country's most dramatic peaks, with replicas of Denali, Half Dome, Mt. Rainer and Mr. Whitney in the bottom of each one. Designed in San Francisco and made from lead-free, handblown glass, they're lighter than leaded glass and a fun conversation piece, even if you and your guests prefer green juice or water to whiskey.

Can Social Capital Save The Private Healthcare System in America--and Improve It? In our monthly recognition of the country's top Social Capital executives, we will honor companies whose leaders are serving the healthcare needs of their community and their employees and helping to make the country one of the healthiest places on earth.

THE BUSINESS OPTIMIZER

People may not trust government as much as they used to but they still place a lot of faith in the business community. Businesses are the most trusted institution in the country, according to the Edelman 2022 Trust Barometer. In one positive sign, 77% of workers around the world trust their employer, and 61% trust business in general. We believe those numbers will only get higher as more leaders embrace the mission of being Social Capital CEOs.

Social Capital in Action

Like all great business ideas, the concept of "servant leadership" has evolved since the late Robert Greenleaf began writing essays on the topic, and other writers grabbed the baton. Cheryl Bachelder, a director at US Foods and Chik-fil-A, says now is the time for a new generation of leaders to own the concept of servant leadership and show examples of what it looks like in real life. "We need dozens of stories of evidencing the positive impact of setting aside self-interest for the benefit of the people and companies that have been entrusted to our care," she writes in "Is Servant Leadership Finally Catching On?" It's a must-read for any Social Capital leader.
