  • Softbank CEO vows to invest $100B in US after Trump meet

    President-elect Donald Trump met with SoftBank Group CEO Masayoshi Son on Monday to announce the Japanese company is investing $100 billion in projects based in the US in the next four years. The SoftBank Group, which has $30 billion of cash on hand, said that its American investments could create 100,000 jobs in artificial intelligence before 2029. Trump has promised to expedite permitting to companies that invests $1 billion in the US.

  • Cocoa prices soar globally in bad news for chocolate lovers

    Cocoa futures continue to rise to new records, with experts forecasting that the global supply demands will worsen the increasing costs for chocolate. Cocoa futures rose as much as 5.5% to $11,925 a ton on Monday, breaking April's record. Prices have nearly tripled, causing chocolatiers like Hershey Corporation and Lindt & Spruengli to increase prices. West Africa accounts for almost 60% of the worldwide production of cocoa beans.

Female teen school shooter kills 2, herself

The 17-year-old female accused of carrying out a mass shooting at a Wisconsin Christian school died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The unnamed teen girl appeared to die by suicide at the Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, after killing a teacher and student, and injuring six others with a 9 mm handgun Monday morning. Two people remained in critical condition and four others remained hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. It is the latest in a long line of school shootings in the US, where guns outnumber people and attempts to restrict firearm access face perennial political deadlock.

Trump may nominate Dem to head FEMA

President-elect Donald Trump is considering naming a Florida Democrat to lead the Federal Emergency Management Agency in a surprising bipartisan move. Rep. Jared Moskowitz, a Democrat and seasoned emergency management expert, previously led Florida's Division of Emergency Management under Republican Governor Ron DeSantis. Moskowitz previously introduced legislation to expand FEMA's authority and funding in Congress. Trump's consideration of Moskowitz reflects a potential shift toward including opposition voices.

Sam's Club goes from tornado to futuristic

A Sam's Club store that was hit by a tornado in 2022 has reopened after undergoing a remodeling that included a series of innovative upgrades. The company wanted to "reimagine what Sam's Club could be" and "came back bigger and better than ever," said a Sam's Club spokeswoman in a promotional video. Where once stood a pile of debris has been transformed into a first of its kind store in Grapevine, Texas with no cash registers; instead, customers can use the Scan & Go option to drop items in the cart or ship purchases to their doorstep.
