Biden hails ceasefire agreement between Israel, Hezbollah
President Joe Biden hailed a US and French-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah on Tuesday, saying he hoped it could be a springboard to peace in Gaza too. It was a rare boost for Biden as he prepares to leave the White House and hand over to President-elect Donald Trump on January 20. After over a year of cross-border fire and two months of all-out war in Lebanon, Biden said the deal was designed to be a "permanent cessation of hostilities" between Israel and Hezbollah. However, hostilities continued up until the deal was set to begin at 4 a.m. local time.

Fresh US tariffs on Canada and Mexico could raise costs of everything from automobiles and building materials to fruits and vegetables after President-elect Donald Trump threatened to erect new trade barriers. Similarly, further tariff hikes on China could add to consumer prices. The US is still reliant on the world's second biggest economy for goods like electronics and batteries.

New US home sales hit lowest point in more than two years
New home sales in the US fell short of analyst expectations in October, hitting the lowest rate since late 2022, according to data released Tuesday, despite mortgage rates ticking up. Sales of new homes came in at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 610,000 last month, Commerce Department data showed, down 17.3% from September. That rate was notably higher at 738,000.

Trump to create 'AI Czar' with Musk's help

President-elect Donald Trump is likely to create a new White House post to oversee federal policies and governmental use of artificial intelligence. The proposed "AI czar" would be selected with help from billionaire Trump confidant Elon Musk, who owns an AI company, and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, citing sources on Trump's transition team. Trump recently appointed both men to lead a new, independent Department of Government Efficiency.

Giuliani attacks judge after losing luxury car

Rudy Giuliani was slapped by a federal judge Tuesday for not showing "anything close to due diligence" regarding evidence requirements to the election workers he defamed in 2020. The blowup came after the judge took the keys to his prized 1980 Mercedes-Benz SL500 convertible, which he drove to a polling station earlier this month. Judge Lewis Liman also ruled that Giuliani won't be allowed to skip an upcoming court date in order to attend Donald Trump's inauguration.

World's oldest man dies with music, love

John Alfred Tinniswood, the world's oldest man, died on Monday at the age of 112 surrounded in his final days by "music and love," his family said. Tinniswood, who claimed the title in April 2024 when 114-year-old Juan Vincente Perez from Venezuela passed away, died at a care home in Southport, England. Tinniswood served with the Royal Army Pay Corps in World War II and worked at BP before retiring in 1972.
