Walz wows DNC with vow to defeat Trump

Democratic vice presidential nominee and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz brought down the house at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Wednesday, promising to fight alongside running mate Kamala Harris to keep former president Donald Trump out of office. The folksy Midwesterner was introduced through his life as a national guardsman, teacher and football coach. Walz vowed to bring that same fighting spirit to the table to defeat Trump in the November election. The DNC closes tonight with a much-anticipated appearance by Harris.

Venezuela is at a crossroads, with strongman Nicolas Maduro doubling down on his disputed reelection victory and the opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia and his supporters vowing to resist "to the end." The choice appears between entrenching authoritarianism or democratic change. Three weeks later, with 25 deaths, dozens of injuries and more than 2,400 arrested in spontaneous anti-Maduro protests in the 48 hours following the vote, nothing has changed.

Microsoft tries to win back gamers at event

Microsoft held its biggest video game stand ever at Gamescom in Germany, aiming to win over players after several rocky months of studio closures and rising fees. Microsoft's decision that its blockbuster "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle", initially meant to be an exclusive for its Xbox console, would also be made available on rival Sony's PlayStation 5 in spring 2025. The decision follows a shift that began in February with four of its games being made available to rival consoles.
