China fears North Korea-Russia pact: US

Despite its public alliance with Russia, China is worried North Korea could be emboldened into starting a regional crisis following President Vladimir Putin's visit, a top US official said Monday. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell said that China has indicated in interactions with the US that it is "anxious" after Putin last week signed a defense deal with Pyongyang. Russia, the US claims, seeks greater support for North Korea including potentially on the nuclear front, Campbell said.

Dagestan attacks raise security questions

As Russia reels from a spate of deadly shootings by armed extremists, questions swirl over how the Kremlin's security forces failed to prevent the attacks. Pro-Kremlin officials suggested Ukraine and the West were somehow linked to Sunday's violence in the southern Dagestan region, in which gunmen opened fire on churches and synagogues, killing 20. But analysts say the shootings are another example of how blindsided the Russian authorities have become to homegrown Islamist violence.

River Seine under gun as Olympics approach

The river Seine is set to be a star feature of the Paris Olympics, but heavy rain, pollution and security fears mean there is suspense around its role just one month out from the start. A July 26 opening ceremony has been planned along the famed waterway and it will also host open-water swimming and a leg of the triathlon. But with the clock ticking, the river is currently flowing too fast for rehearsals and is too dirty for sport.
