World leaders back just peace for Ukraine

World leaders backed Ukraine's independence and territorial integrity -- and the need for eventual talks with Russia on ending the war -- but left the key questions of how and when unresolved at a weekend summit. Top officials from more than 90 states spent the weekend at a Swiss resort for a summit dedicated to resolving the largest European conflict since World War II. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed the diplomatic "success" of the event, which took place without Russia, and said the path was open for a second peace summit.

Nuclear weapons arise amid global tensions

The role of atomic weapons has become more prominent and nuclear states are modernizing arsenals as geopolitical relations deteriorate, researchers said Monday, urging world leaders to "step back and reflect". Diplomatic efforts to control nuclear arms also suffered major setbacks amid strained international relations over the conflicts in such hot locations as Ukraine and Gaza, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) said in its annual yearbook.

Princess of Wales makes public appearance

Kate, the Princess of Wales, made her first public appearance over the weekend since announcing her cancer diagnosis in March. She joined husband Prince William their three children, King Charles III, Queen Camilla, and other members of the royal family at this year's Trooping the Colour. This annual military parade is held to celebrate the king's official birthday, and it was Kate's return to public life following her crisis.
