US standing by Israel despite Rafah strike

President Joe Biden has no plans to change his Israel policy following a deadly weekend strike on Rafah, but is not turning a "blind eye" to the plight of Palestinian civilians, the White House said Tuesday. Gazan authorities said 45 people were killed as a blaze tore through a camp for displaced people following Sunday's "tragic mistake" strike by Israel. But Washington said Israel's actions in Rafah do not cross Biden's "red lines," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said.

Biden uses Jan. 6 officers on campaign trail

President Joe Biden's reelection campaign is enlisting the help of three police officers who were among those defending the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, when rioters stormed the building in an effort to stop the presidential certification vote. The three officers are planning to tell voters in key swing states that former President Donald Trump threatens fundamental American rights as well as US democracy.

Pope Francis apologizes for using gay slur

Pope Francis issued an extraordinary apology on Tuesday over his reported use of a gay slur in a closed-door meeting with Italian bishops last week.
