Trump faces hush-money trial today in NYC

Donald Trump becomes the first US ex-president to go on criminal trial today, pushing the nation's legal and electoral systems to the limit less than seven months before Americans decide whether to return the scandal-plagued Republican to the White House. Trump is accused of falsifying business records in a scheme to cover up an alleged sexual encounter with porn star Stormy Daniels so as not to doom his 2016 election. The so-called hush money affair is only one of the four criminal cases hanging over Trump and arguably the least serious.

VP Harris targets Trump on abortion issue

Vice President Kamala Harris squarely laid the blame on Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump for the recent loss of abortion rights in Arizona. This assertion came shortly after a court upheld a 160-year-old ban on the procedure in the state. Arizona's conservative Supreme Court decision sent ripples through one of the most fiercely contested states in the 2024 election, potentially tipping the scales in the presidential race and deciding the balance of power in the Senate.

Scheffler labors to second Masters victory

World number one Scottie Scheffler had vowed to quit in the middle of his bid to win a second Masters tournament if his wife went into labor. As it turned out, it was Scheffler who delivered Sunday at Augusta National, dominating a back-nine shootout for a four-stroke victory. Scheffler, who also took the green jacket in 2022, won a record $3.6 million top prize after a drama-filled battle with Sweden's Ludvig Aberg.
