  • NYC approves controversial toll to visit Lower Manhattan

    Traveling in New York is already costly, but it just got worse as transit authorities have approved a controversial $15 toll, set to take effect in mid-June, for motorists entering the busiest part of Manhattan. The board of New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority on voted 11-1 to impose the toll, the first in an American city, is aimed at encouraging the use of public transportation.

Rebuilding Baltimore bridge will take time

A ship carrying a giant crane was en route Thursday to the scene of the tragic bridge collapse over Baltimore Harbor, as authorities warned of extensive work before the US port can reopen. The machinery will be deployed in a tricky operation to clear the twisted steel remnants of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, blocking the entrance to the Port of Baltimore. Officials cautioned there would be challenges ahead, as efforts to recover the bodies of the four men still missing were called off when it was deemed too dangerous to send divers into the wreckage.

Israel reschedules Rafah meeting with US

Battles and bombardment pounded Gaza on Thursday, after the US said Israel agreed to reschedule talks with tensions worsening between the allies. US criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has mounted over Gaza's civilian death toll, dire food shortages, and Israeli plans to push its ground offensive against Hamas militants into the far-southern city of Rafah, which is packed with displaced civilians. World leaders have warned Israel against a Rafah offensive.

Macron, Lula unite despite Ukraine split

French President Emmanuel Macron and Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Thursday displayed unity on global issues, while skirting differences on the war in Ukraine. Macron wrapped up his tour by paying tribute to "the spirit of resistance" of Lula's government for "restoring democracy" after a crowd of former president Jair Bolsonaro stormed the seats of power in the city in January 2023.
