US tells UN court to back off Israel demands

The US told the UN's top court on Wednesday that Israel should not be legally forced to withdraw from occupied Palestinian territory without security guarantees. The International Court of Justice is holding a week of hearings after a request from the UN, with an unprecedented 52 countries giving their views on Israel's occupation. Most speakers have demanded that Israel end its occupation, which came after a Six-Day War in 1967, but the US came to its ally's defense at the court.

US charges yakuza leader for selling nukes

US authorities said Wednesday they had charged a member of the Japanese yakuza criminal underworld with handling nuclear material sourced from Myanmar and seeking to sell it to fund an illicit arms deal. Yakuza leader Takeshi Ebisawa and co-defendant Somphop Singhasiri "brazenly" moved material containing uranium and weapons-grade plutonium, alongside drugs, the filing said. The weaponry to be part of the arms deal included surface-to-air missiles, the indictment alleges.

Over $1.2B in student loan debt forgiven

The Biden-Harris administration announced the discharge of $1.2 billion in student loans for nearly 153,000 eligible borrowers under President Joe Biden's Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) Plan. With 7.5 million borrowers now enrolled in SAVE, this action is a big step in the administration's efforts to provide relief to student loan borrowers. With the move, nearly 3.9 million borrowers have received loan forgiveness totaling almost $138 billion during Biden's tenure.
