US, Jordan push for ceasefire in Gaza war

Jordan's King Abdullah II appealed for a full ceasefire to end the war in Gaza after talks with Joe Biden, striking a discordant note with the US president who is seeking a shorter six-week pause to allow Israel time to defeat Hamas. Biden said civilians in the southern city of Rafah must be protected as Israel considers a ground incursion, while the Jordanian warned against any offensive at all. Biden said the US is working to negotiate a pause in fighting of least six weeks in Gaza as part of a wider deal that would also involve the release of hostages.

Trump appeals immunity claim to SCOTUS

Former President Donald Trump on Monday appealed to the US Supreme Court to block a lower court ruling that had denied his claim to immunity for alleged crimes while he was president. The appeal for the top court to stay the earlier ruling is crucial to deciding whether Trump can be put on trial for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election in which he lost to current President Joe Biden. The appeal puts Trump's fate in the Supreme Court's hands nine months before election day.

Biden creates a stir by appearing on TikTok

US President Joe Biden's debut on TikTok has caused a stir -- not least because the Chinese-owned social media platform is considered a security risk by Washington. The video posted during the Super Bowl on Sunday was part of an effort by the 81-year-old's reelection campaign to reach younger voters, and included a reference to the quirky meme of a laser-eyed Biden. But Republicans slammed Biden for using an app that is banned on US federal government devices.

Tuesday's answer: Gerald Ford was appointed to replace Spiro Agnew as vice president and replaced Richard Nixon as president in 1974 to become the only person to serve as president without being elected.
