Lula bets on fossil fuels and social agenda

Analysts are puzzled by the real priorities of Brazil President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva for the energy industry. At the same time his administration has significantly reduced Amazon deforestation, it's increasing investments in fossil fuels. The answer may be in the need to generate revenue that will help Lula implement his social agenda. Lula is embracing both high- and low-carbon energy sources in an attempt to increase state revenue and bolster energy security.

New York's task force against shoplifting

New York Mayor Eric Adams introduced a task force to work on the city's plan to address retail theft. The group includes businesses, law enforcement and local officials. This year, shoplifting complaints are down by 7.9%, while arrests for the crime have increased by 16%. The drop comes after complaints jumped 40% last year. Target decided to close one store in the city because of theft and organized retail crime.

Meta wants ads to reveal AI-altered images

Meta said that advertisers will soon have to disclose when artificial intelligence or other software is used to create or alter imagery or audio in political ads. The requirement will take effect globally at Facebook and Instagram at the start of next year. Advertisers will also have to reveal when AI is used to create completely fake yet realistic people or events, according to Meta.
