Israel steps up attacks on defenseless Gaza

Every 30 seconds Israeli artillery is fired at a barely visible target in the Gaza Strip as IDF soldiers amass along the border. Israel has vowed to "crush" Hamas after gunmen from the Palestinian Islamist group crossed the border and killed 1,200 people -- the deadliest attack on the country since it was founded 75 years ago. Six days later, Israel's army has kept pounding the densely populated Gaza Strip with artillery shells and air strikes, as it prepares for a possible ground invasion.

Delta's Q3 earnings good sign for air travel

Consumers' interest for air travel is showing strength for the last three months of the year, boosted by international flights, Delta Air Lines said in its outlook for the period. Delta expects revenue to grow 9% to 12% in the fourth quarter, according to Thursday's earnings report. Delta said Q3 sales rose 13% to $14.6 billion, bigger than the expectations of a 10% increase. Profit jumped 35% to $1.3 billion or $2.03 per share.

Discussions to end actors' strike fall apart

Talks between Hollywood actors and studios over an ongoing strike collapsed Thursday, in a blow to hopes for a swift end to a crisis that has crippled the entertainment industry. Heads of studios such as Disney and Netflix had been meeting regularly since last week with negotiators for the Screen Actors Guild, whose members walked off film and TV sets in July. In a statement, the studios said talks would be suspended, saying the gap between the two sides is "too great."
