US manufacturing slows pace of contraction

The index that tracks activity in the US manufacturing industry showed a contraction for the 11th consecutive month. The pace of contraction was the slowest in almost a year as companies prepare for higher consumer demand in the fourth quarter. The manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index rose to 49 in September from 47.6 in August, the ISM said Monday. The PMI has been under that level since November, the longest period of contraction since the 2007-2009 recession.

US doctors win Nobel Prize for mRNA work

Katalin Kariko and Drew Weissman won the Nobel Medicine Prize on Monday for work on messenger RNA (mRNA) technology that paved the way for groundbreaking Covid-19 vaccines. The vaccines were approved for use in December 2020, and together with other Covid vaccines "have saved millions of lives and prevented severe disease in many more," the jury said. The Nobel committee broke with tradition of honoring decades-old research to ensure it stands the test of time.

Ratcliffe considering minority bid for Man U

British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe is considering changing his bid and offering to buy a minority stake in Manchester United, according to reports. Ratcliffe, founder of chemicals giant INEOS, emerged as one of two leading candidates to purchase the 20-time English champions, along with Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani. A lengthy takeover saga from the Glazer family has followed, with numerous bids entered by both boyhood fan Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim.
