North Korea agrees to supply arms to Russia

North Korea's suspected plans to supply Russia with ammunition could allow Moscow to keep up its war effort in Ukraine but would fall short of a solid strategic alliance, experts say. Diplomatically isolated, President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday welcomed North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, with Washington warning the meeting could result in an arms deal especially for the artillery shells sorely needed by Moscow. Russia has ramped up domestic production to a forecast 2.5 million shells this year, from 1.7 million in 2022, the year it invaded neighboring Ukraine.

Earth deep in danger zone of its boundaries

Human activity has weakened Earth's resilience, pushing it far beyond the "safe operating space" that keeps the world livable for humans, a landmark study said Wednesday. Six of nine planetary boundaries -- climate change, biodiversity loss, deforestation, synthetic chemicals including plastics, freshwater depletion, and nitrogen use -- are already deep in the red zone, an international team of scientists reported. Two of the remaining three -- ocean acidification and the concentration of particle pollution and dust in the atmosphere -- are borderline red zone.

Over 500 Pennsylvania state police, using helicopters, drones, dogs and backed by special units, finally caught Danelo Cavalcante, 34, who showed uncanny ability to dodge capture. He evaded police in the Philadelphia area since his Aug. 31 escape.
