Hurricane, wildfires hit western US, Canada

Two huge and fast-moving wildfires merged overnight in western Canada, threatening hundreds of homes and forcing continued evacuations in British Columbia. With flames threatening the region, tens of thousands of residents have now been ordered to leave. In the typically arid US Southwest, the remnants of Hurricane Hilary were bringing torrential rains and 90 mph winds late Sunday. Although Hilary weakened into a tropical storm before reaching southern California and Nevada, the heavy rains are expected to cause mass flooding.

Russia's return to Moon marred by crash

The Luna-25 probe, Russia's first Moon mission in almost 50 years, crashed on the Moon after an incident during pre-landing maneuvers, the Russian space agency said Sunday. The 800-kilogram Luna-25 probe was to have made a soft landing Monday on the lunar south pole -- the first in history. With Luna-25, Moscow had hoped to build on the legacy of its Soviet-era Luna program, marking a return to independent lunar exploration in the face of financial troubles, corruption scandals and growing isolation from the West.

England went into the Women's World Cup final dreaming of global domination but their 1-0 loss to Spain was a reality check that will haunt them and Sarina Wiegman. England's Dutch coach admitted Spain were the better team in front of nearly 76,000 in Sydney to lift the World Cup for the first time in their history on Sunday. Spain's triumph over the European champions came even with them missing several top players because of a mutiny in the camp that broke out 11 months ago.
