Biden tries to put wind in his political sails

President Joe Biden on Thursday visited a Philadelphia shipyard on Thursday, symbolizing the industrial boom he hopes will put wind in his re-election campaign's sails. Making his "Bidenomics" case to bring manufacturing back to the US, he touted the Inflation Reduction Act, which poured almost $500 billion in spending and tax breaks into green energy, as well as other huge legislative wins funding infrastructure and semiconductor development. But Biden's main focus of this return to industrial might is in high-tech areas like microchips and clean energy.

US fears for soldier's safety in North Korea

The US fears an American soldier who fled to North Korea may be mistreated by Pyongyang, which has yet to respond to inquiries about his fate, officials said Thursday. Private Second Class Travis King was due to return to the US to face disciplinary consequences after serving jail time in South Korea, but instead joined a tour of the border and fled across it. The Army has launched an investigation into the incident, but officials made clear that the top priority is securing the soldier's release.

McDonald's ordered to pay for hot nuggets

A Florida jury awarded a young girl and her family $800,000 in damages in a civil lawsuit filed after the child was allegedly burned by hot chicken nuggets in 2019. McDonald's and one of its franchisees were found at fault for the hot nuggets served at a drive-thru that left the then-4-year-old with second-degree burns. The jury decided that the girl's family should receive $800,000 for their pain and suffering.
