Biden unveils re-election plan: 'Bidenomics'

President Joe Biden is making a big bet on the US economy powering him to re-election next year with the unveiling of a "Bidenomics" pitch to voters this week. After inheriting an economy ravaged by the Covid-19 pandemic, Biden has had a hard time persuading Americans that he's doing a good job. A recent poll found Biden's likely 2024 rematch rival, Donald Trump, leading by 18 percentage points on the question of who handled the economy better. Biden will start making his case today with a speech in Chicago, and the White House thinks it can turn the tables.

US targets Wagner Group for Africa actions

The US on Tuesday imposed sanctions aimed at disrupting gold mining activities that fund the Wagner Group in Africa, vowing to hold the mercenaries accountable for abuses days after they staged a mutiny in Russia. The measures against the Wagner Group had been previously planned but were briefly put on hold as US officials sought to avoid appearing to favor a side in a power struggle between the mercenaries' chief Yevgeny Prigozhin and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
