Heat wave hits southern US, around world

More than 500,000 customers are experiencing power outages in the southern US as officials warn of severe weather ensuing in the region through Wednesday. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued "widespread" heat-related advisories in most parts of Texas, portions of New Mexico, and some parts of southern Arizona. Above normal temperatures of 108 degrees were recorded Monday, and they are expected to go even higher Tuesday, possibly hitting 110 degrees.

Meanwhile, wind and solar power together hit a record 12% of total electricity generation, helped by the biggest ever increase in capacity for both.

The 30 men, held close to two decades after being seized as suspects following the 2001 9/11 attack on the US, have endured a litany of abuse, including forced cell extractions, poor medical and mental health care, and inadequate access to family either by in-person visits or calls.
