Russia strikes civilian targets amid holiday

Ukraine said Sunday that the death toll had risen to at least 21 after a Russian missile slammed into a tower block in the city of Dnipro during a massive wave of strikes causing power outages and blackouts across the war-torn country. Ukrainian officials said more than 40 people were still missing after the Dnpiro strike, which came as Ukraine celebrated the Old New Year, a popular holiday, and as Britain became the first Western country to offer Kyiv the heavy tanks it has long sought.

Cost of climate disasters exploded in 2022

Climate change related disasters and the costs to deal with them are adding up, according to a new report from NOAA, which says the U.S. alone saw 18 different billion-dollar weather and climate disasters in 2022. Even more troubling, the data also found that the U.S. has experienced a billion-dollar disaster every 18 days on average between 2017 and 2021, compared to one every 82 days in the 1980s.

Artificial intelligence and the educational system are at odds over the advent of ChatGPT, the latest in know-it-all chatbots that landed with a bang last year. The new technology has tricked some AI experts into believing it is sentient, and it has fooled more than a few educators who think they can tell the difference between a student's essay and a bot, but some universities are taking steps to guard against AI shortcuts.
