Good and bad records took tumbles in 2022

Forgive is for sounding like a broken record, but 2022 featured a lot of broken records. From roasting temperatures and blinding blizzards due to climate change to historic hurricanes and wildfires, 2022 was a year of extremes. The UK lost its longest-serving monarch while changing prime ministers twice in three months; the Supreme Court overturned half-century precedent in Roe v. Wade; and the Webb Telescope allowed us to look deeper into space than ever before in human history.

Going once, twice ... auctions sold in 2022

Record inflation didn’t seem to impact the lucrative auction market in 2022. Auction house Christie's announced record sales of $8.4 billion in 2022, outshining its rival Sotheby's, which also posted its best-ever result at $8 billion for the year. Christie's easily topped the $7.1 billion it made in 2021 as the art world emerged from the Covid-19 pandemic, which greatly hindered auction operations and left big-spenders eager.

Music, concerts, movies returned in 2022

Music hit a high note in 2022 with several big name artists and acts releasing new records and returning to the road to tour after a lengthy pandemic break, including Taylor Swift blowing up Spotify with her “Midnights” blockbuster. Pitchfork released its top 100 songs of 2022, and the list includes hits by Beyonce, Harry Styles, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Megan Thee Stallion. However, the No. 1 song of the year is probably by a band you hadn't heard before this catchy ditty dropped.

Chart topper

Taylor Swift became the first artist to hold all 10 spots on the Billboard Hot 100, and she took over second place on the all-time list for most top 10 songs. Who did she pass for second, and whom does she trail?

Thursday's answer: Waitress Phyllis Phenzo at Sal's Pizzeria in New York received a $3 million tip after helping a customer select numbers for a 1984 lottery. His ticket won $6 million and tipped her half of it.
