It's Xi's party at China's historic gathering

Chinese President Xi Jinping took the stage Sunday at the start of the Communist Party Congress that is expected to confirm him as the country's most powerful leader since Mao Zedong. Xi's opening speech recounted the government's work under his tenure and set his vision for his precedent-breaking third term. The 69-year-old Xi is expected to secure a third term as Communist Party general secretary, throwing out leader succession norms that have prevailed since the 1990s.

Musk reverses course on Starlink in Ukraine

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk retracted a previous statement about funding Starlink's satellite internet service in Ukraine, saying his company will "keep funding Ukraine's government for free," one day after he said SpaceX would not be able to pay for it indefinitely. SpaceX reportedly sent a letter to the Pentagon last month, asking it to fund the Ukraine government and its military's use of Starlink broadband. The 25,000 terminals have helped Ukraine turn the tide in the war against Russia.

California police nab suspected serial killer

Police in Stockton, California, arrested a man suspected of killing six men and wounding one woman. The suspect had been driving around Northern California early Saturday morning looking for his next victim, according to police. "We are sure we stopped another killing," Chief Stanley McFadden of the Stockton Police Department said. Weslee Brownlee, 43, was stopped around 2 a.m. while he was driving with a handgun, reportedly dressed in all black with a mask around his neck.
