Ukraine calls for talks; Russia fires ICBM warning shot
Ukraine called Wednesday for urgent negotiations with Russia in Mariupol, which appeared close to falling after weeks of siege, as Russian President Vladimir Putin flexed his military muscle with the test launch of a new, nuclear capable ICBM. Washington downplayed the test of the intercontinental ballistic missile and said it had been notified in advance, but Putin said it would make the Kremlin's enemies "think twice", raising tensions nearly two months after he invaded Ukraine and ignited a global crisis.

Interest rate hikes take toll on home sales, mortgage apps
Sales of existing US homes dropped for the second straight month in March, an industry survey said Wednesday, a sign that higher mortgage rates and rising prices are taking the wind out of the sector's sails. Sales fell 2.7% last month to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 5.77 million, which was 4.5% lower than in the same month last year. Mortgage applications and refinances also declined for the second consecutive month.

The return-to-office strategy followed by many businesses has put them at risk of a wave of employee departures amid an already tight labor market. A new survey.released Wednesday by Future Forum shows return-to-work policies from the pandemic have led to a rise in stress and anxiety levels for non-executive employees.

Unruly passengers warned after mask lift

Airlines and travelers alike have cheered the end of the federal mask mandate on flights, but a second pandemic-era policy is here to stay. On Wednesday, the FAA announced that it would be making its zero-tolerance policy towards unruly behavior permanent. There is a link between the zero-tolerance policy, the mask mandate and unruly behavior on flights. Since airlines began mandating masks to combat COVID-19, a number of unruly passengers have grounded flights.

False alarm forces US Capitol evacuation

The U.S. Capitol was briefly evacuated Wednesday after authorities sounded a threat alarm over a harmless parachute stunt, prompting top lawmaker Nancy Pelosi to blast aviation officials for an "inexcusable" failure. Police tasked with protecting the complex at the heart of U.S. government in Washington issued an initial statement shortly after 6:30 p.m. ET saying they had ordered an evacuation as they were "tracking an aircraft that poses a probable threat." It did not give further details.

'Grass'-roots candidate blazes up for 4/20

In a brash new campaign video, Indiana Democratic Senate candidate Thomas McDermott Jr. is seen smoking marijuana in an effort to push for legalization in the state and at the federal level. The video shows McDermott passing a joint and calling for law changes "so Hoosiers can get the health and economic benefits of cannabis." The video was released on April 20 (4/20), a day that celebrates cannabis.
