Police search for suspect in deadly NYC subway shooting
A gunman threw smoke bombs and opened fire in a New York City subway car on Tuesday, injuring 16 people and throwing the morning commute into chaos in the latest violence in the city's transit system. Smoke billowed out as the train car pulled into the 36th Street station in Brooklyn's Sunset Park neighborhood. Riders trapped inside poured out, some coughing and collapsing to the ground as images showed streaks of blood on the platform. The whereabouts of the perpetrator were unknown but authorities had identified a suspect and searched the into Tuesday night.

Fueled by energy crisis, inflation hits 40-year high of 8.5%
A key inflation metric for the U.S. economy has grown to levels not seen in the last 40 years as the Bureau of Labor Statistics released its Consumer Price Index and showed that headline inflation rose by 8.5% in March. Much of the increase is being driven by spikes in energy costs amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The price of gas rose by 48.3% and fuel oil rose 70.1%.

Concerns rise over chemical weapons use

The U.S. said Tuesday it has "credible information" that Russia may use "chemical agents" in its offensive to take the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol, reigniting concerns about the use of banned weapons. President Joe Biden called Russia's actions "genocide" While the West and Kyiv have been warning Moscow since the start of its invasion against using chemical weapons, fears have grown this week amid unconfirmed reports that such weapons may have already been deployed in Mariupol.
