Dr. Anthony Fauci had some discouraging words for Americans about the emerging Omicron variant less than a week before the Christmas holiday.

3 things you must know
  • Omicron variant spreading anti-holiday cheer around the globe

Just when it looked like Americans were going to be able to enjoy a holiday season without COVID restrictions, the Omicron variant has other plans as lockdowns and shutdowns are back in full force. The Omicron strain only accounts for around 3% of U.S. cases, but it is expected to keep rapidly rising just as it has in other countries.

  • Rental prices expected to continue skyrocketing in 2022

Gas and energy prices were the primary drivers of inflation in 2021, but experts project rental prices to give them a run for their money in 2022 due to a combination of factors, including rising home prices, a shortage of available homes, and a lack of rental properties. The same reasons rent jumped in 2021 are likely to worsen in 2022.

Manchin deals fatal blow to Build Back Better

Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., dealt a fatal blow to President Joe Biden's $1.75 trillion Build Back Better bill Sunday, saying he could not support the legislation's passage. "I've tried everything humanly possible, I can't get there," he said. "... This is a no." Biden and fellow Democrats have spent weeks trying to secure his support for the bill after it was green-lit by the House last month. He is the lone vote needed to pass it in the Senate.

Biden's vaccine mandates are back ... for now

The Biden administration was handed a rare win in its attempts to issue COVID vaccine mandates after the Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the government can enforce a vaccine-or-testing mandate for businesses with 100 or more employees. The ruling could be temporary, however, as the matter appears to be headed to the Supreme Court.
