Thanksgiving arrives as Americans are stomaching the worst case of inflation in three decades, making the traditional feast hard to swallow.

3 things you must know
  • Happy Thanksgiving ... with an extra serving of inflation

Today might not be your family's best Thanksgiving spread, but odds are it will be the most expensive. That's because inflation is having a big impact on the price of food as a traditional turkey dinner feast with all the trimmings costs about 5% more this year.

The latest inflationary trends were released Wednesday, showing a 5% increase in overall prices in October. Food, gas and energy have been the sectors most affected by inflation -- a trifecta of bad news for Thanksgiving diners, travelers and football watchers.

  • Americans celebrate the 400th anniversary of Thanksgiving

Americans aren't just celebrating Thanksgiving today; they're also observing the 400th anniversary of the holiday. Although Thanks-giving wasn't recognized as a federal holiday until 1863, the first unofficial feast was held Nov. 25, 1621, when early Pilgrim settlers and the Wampanoag Native American tribe broke bread together.

Test your knowledge about this distinctly American holiday, like how the tradition of playing football was born (no, the Pilgrims and Native Americans did not start wrestling over a turkey); why former President Abraham Lincoln called for the holiday; and what beverage was a popular choice for the first Thanksgiving shindig.

Defendants found guilty in Arbery murder

America watched two high-profile murder trials play out the week before Thanksgiving, and views on the verdicts reveal just how divided the nation remains. Days after the right celebrated Kyle Rittenhouse's acquittal on all counts, the left cheered the conviction of three Georgia men charged in the shooting death of Black jogger Ahmaud Arbery.

While emotions ran high in both cases, the verdicts have thus far been met with relative calm compared to the climate when these incidents occurred. Perhaps that's because in both cases the juries followed the letter of the law, which is what equal justice is all about. If only both sides could agree to reform the laws instead of using them to attack each other.

Avoid the trend of 'destructive innovation'

"The Great Resignation" refers to the recent trend of individuals leaving the workforce in droves over dissatisfaction with their jobs. But it could also apply to entrepreneurs who are "resigned" to accepting the status quo. It's no wonder employees are walking away from dead-end jobs.

That's just one area where innovation and employee empowerment can set a company apart from others, and those intangibles can have a drawing effect on customers as well as workers. Take your company to the next level by being open to doing things differently than your rivals.

Pentagon creating UFO task force team

Once considered a topic too taboo for any government agency to touch with a 10-foot telescope, UFOs are now the subject of a Pentagon task force that is being created to investigate unexplained aerial sightings. Talking about UFOs once got service members a Section 8 discharge; now it lands them a spot on an a task force to discuss flying saucers.

The move comes after credible reports have surfaced from military pilots about UAPs (Unexplained Aerial Phenomena, leave it to the military to create its own acronym for an acronym). Video images show strange aircraft performing maneuvers that are beyond our technology.
