President Biden has decided to tap into the nation's oil reserves to help lower gas prices, but those aren't the only numbers he hopes to impact.

3 things you must know
  • Biden taps oil reserves to lower gas prices, boost popularity

You know the pain of dipping into your hard-earned savings to address a crisis? That's basically what the U.S. and other nations are doing by tapping into their oil reserves to fight the rising cost of gas. It's a quick fix, yes, but one needed to provide temporary relief from inflation for the people -- and his waning popularity.

While 50 million barrels is a drop in the bucket compared to what is needed to put a dent in the highest gas prices in a decade, it's part of a larger strategy for the president to show he's working on it. His approval ratings seem to have an inversely proportionate relationship with inflationary trends -- as prices go up, his favorables go down. So it makes sense to pump up the supply for price-battered Americans while also fueling up his poll numbers.

  • Holiday shopping a year-long expense for many Americans

While millions of Americans go holiday shopping this weekend, many of them are still paying for last year's gifts. That's according to a NerdWallet survey that shows nearly 3 in 10 of shoppers still haven't paid off the purchases they put on credit cards last year.

Those shiny packages under the tree aren't just gifts that keep on giving; they also keep on taking in the form of high interest rates on unpaid balances. Not surprisingly, the younger you are the more likely you are to do it -- and the longer you have to pay it off.

Pack your patience for holiday travel season

If you're among the millions of Americans hitting the highways or flying the airways this holiday weekend, be sure to pack plenty of patience. Increased travel this Thanksgiving compared to last year's pandemic restrictions are sure to create logjams on the road and in the skies.

And it's not just your own sanity you have to worry about this year. Airlines have reported record numbers of unruly passengers, mostly involving mask mandates and too much alcohol. Be thankful if you can avoid the morons you share the roads and airways with this weekend.

Child COVID cases rising at alarming rate

Remember when kids were the least likely to catch COVID-19 and to experience serious symptoms? Those days are gone due to the more contagious Delta variant and the previously unavailable vaccines to children. Now they make up the majority of new cases in the U.S.

The latest numbers show a 32% increase in child cases from two weeks ago, and experts fear those numbers may go up as kids enjoy the holidays indoors with family and friends. Now that vaccines have been approved for children 5 and up, kids are the main focus of efforts.

Strahan in space? 'GMA' host to blast off

NFL Hall of Famer, longtime morning TV show host, astronaut. Michael Strahan is set to add the latter to his lengthy resume next month when he blasts off to the edge of space aboard Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin flight. He revealed his plans to lift off on the New Shepard rocket on Dec. 9.

"I just want to be a part of it," he said, "... you really feel like you’re part of a great team.” But unlike his New York Giants and "Good Morning America" teams, this crew will travel at Mach 3 over 100 kilometers above Earth. He might need a different kind of "sack" for this one.

Sack attack

Michael Strahan broke the NFL's single-season sacks record 20 years ago. What fellow Hall of Famer did he "sack" to break the record?

Tuesday's answer: A majority of U.S. presidents (29 of 46) served in the military before their role as commander in chief, but only JFK earned the Purple Heart, which is awarded to those wounded in action.
