The standoff between the Taliban, US military and Afghan refugees is already tense. Now another group seeks to light a fuse on the powder keg.

3 things you must know
  • Taliban rival ISIS-K threatens US withdrawal from Afghanistan

Americans and Afghans alike are familiar of the brutal oppression of the Taliban regime. Now they are learning about an even more dangerous militant group known as ISIS-K, a northern branch of the ISIS fighters who destabilized Iraq and Syria for the past decade.

The Biden administration noted a credible threat from the group, which is reportedly planning attacks on Afghan refugees and US service members amid the chaos at the Kabul airport. The "enemy of my enemy is my friend" pact may explain the relative cooperation between the US and the Taliban as both sides hope to avoid an even more extreme Islamic group stirring up an already volatile situation..

  • FAA, airlines baffled over how to handle unruly passengers

So you booked a flight and didn’t bother to notice that you are required to wear a mask and that alcohol has been banned. Yet you decide to BYOB, refuse to wear a mask, and maybe rough up a flight attendant or two. Welcome to the unfriendly skies, pandemic edition.

Baffled that the numbers of in-flight incidents continue to soar, the FAA released a PSA declaring “Unruly Behavior Doesn’t Fly.” But apparently it is still trying to fly as the rising number of incidents is forcing the FAA and airlines to enforce higher fines and stricter rules.

  • Outfitters, sporting goods retailers cashing in on pandemic

It sounds crass to point out that there have been a few good things to come out of the nightmarish COVID pandemic. One positive is the sporting goods and outdoors retail sector, which has boomed while Americans seek safer options than indoor gyms and fitness centers.

Case in point: Dick’s Sporting Goods had a massive second quarter, with a 21% increase in revenue and projections for continued growth. It seems humans have reconnected with Mother Nature in these dire times, and that means a whole lot of green for outfitters.

US military orders 800,000 troops vaccinated

US military members are trained to avoid taking fire, but now they're being ordered on the receiving end of a shot as Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin made COVID vaccines mandatory for all eligible service members.

More than 800,000 unvaccinated troops will begin lining up to take the Pfizer vaccine, which received full FDA approval earlier this week. That allowed the military to include it on the list of up to 17 different vaccines soldiers are required to take, depending on the location of their service.

Baby on Nirvana album cover suing band

Nirvana’s iconic album “Nevermind,” featuring the image of a naked baby in a swimming pool, is at the center of a controversy three decades later. The child pictured on the cover, now 30, is suing the band and others involved in the album for using his likeness in "child pornography."

The ‘90s grunge band and the album, which sold more than 30 million copies, took the world by storm in 1991 with its edgy Seattle sound. The recognizable cover of a baby swimming toward a dollar bill dangling from a fish hook seemingly made a statement about the nature of capitalism. Now there appears to be a different type of money grab in the works.

Joey Chestnut holds the hot dog-eating record, but Oscar Mayer has the speed record for driving one. Which is higher -- the number of dogs Chestnut ate in 10 minutes or the max mph speed of the Wienermobile?

Wednesday’s answer: John Elway finished second to Herschel Walker in the 1982 Heisman Trophy voting, but the Stanford product went on to lead the Denver Broncos to three Super Bowl titles -- two as a QB, one as GM.
