U.S. stock markets continue to defy conventional wisdom, soaring to record highs Monday despite the drag of a lingering pandemic and rising inflation.

3 things you must know
  • Wall Street rides momentum to records for Nasdaq, S&P 500

Fueled largely by tech stocks and momentum from last week's record-setting levels, Wall Street continued to ride the wave to prosperity as the the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite set new records Monday even as the benchmark Dow Jones retreated.

It's the latest in a series of rallies for U.S. stocks, driven by major technology shares. Facebook increased 4.2% and saw its market capitalization top the $1 trillion mark after a federal court dismissed an antitrust complaint against it..The markets keep booming despite concerns about inflation, which The Fed seems to have put to bed.

  • Delta variant undoing progress against virus around the globe

COVID-19 is starting to sound like the summer blockbuster "Jaws 2" -- "Just when you thought it was safe to go back in public ..." That's because we could be in for a scary sequel to last summer's surge.

Asia, Australia, Europe and other hot spots around the globe are experiencing major setbacks as a result of the Delta variant, an Indian mutation that appears to be more resistant to vaccines. While the U.S. is easing restrictions, the rapidly spreading Delta variant and the failure to reach the 70% vaccination rate by the Fourth of July threaten to terrorize millions of Americans again this summer.

  • Mixing vaccines could be critical in fight against mutating virus

How many times have you been told not to mix your medications? As it turns out, mixing and matching some COVID vaccines could be the key to jump-starting the human immune system against the virus.

The COM-COV study conducted by Oxford University discovered that a combination of the Pfizer-BioNTech and AstraZeneca formulas generates a "robust" response in the immune systems of those who get both. However, the study yielded mixed results based on the order, type and timing of the shots, so more research is needed.

UBS offering hybrid work for most employees

While employees slowly return to the office in the transition to a post-pandemic normal, some companies are embracing the work-from-home concept. UBS, the world’s largest private bank, is breaking from the pack.

The Swiss-based UBS announced Monday that it will accommodate up to two-thirds of its total work force to resume work on a hybrid schedule, meaning some mix of home and office work. It is a big departure from the back-to-work model of other major banks, and perhaps a bigger draw.

Record crowds flock back to theaters

If you're not one of the millions of movie buffs who attended the grand re-opening of AMC theaters over the weekend, you might be the only one. The cinema group reported a record turnout of 2 million in the U.S. (and a half-million in the U.K.) after 15 months of empty seats and blank screens.

Although the record was likely fueled by the much-anticipated release of “F9: The Fast Saga,” which raked in $70 million in the U.S. alone, the total haul of over $400 million indicates Americans miss sitting in a dark room and catching a flick with strangers while eating overpriced popcorn.

Fast & Curious

"F-9: The Fast Legacy" returns the "Fast & Furious" franchise to the top of the box-office records. What franchise held the top spot in 2018 and '19?

Monday's answer: In 1984, a patron at Sal's Pizzeria in Yonkers, N.Y., offered his waitress a 50/50 split of his lottery ticket in lieu of a cash tip. Phyllis Penza took the chance and received a record tip of $3 million
