President Joe Biden pleaded to the American people not to let up on COVID-19 precautions before the finish line for fear of a fourth wave.

3 Things
  • Hitting the wall?: Imagine running a marathon and giving up at mile marker 26. That's how President Joe Biden and the CDC compared the recent relaxing of COVID protocols just when the U.S. is getting close to having some control over the virus for the first time in a year.

With more than 2 million vaccinations per day and recent declines in cases, deaths and hospitalizations, the U.S. saw a 10% increase in cases this week with numbers on the rise in 28 states as the new variants and loosened restrictions threaten to undo a year's work..

“People are letting up on precautions, which is a very bad thing. We are giving up hard-fought, hard-won gains,” Biden said Monday. “Please. This is not politics. Reinstate the mandate if you let it down. ... America, it's time to do even more. All of us have to do our part.”

Biden wasn't alone in calling for more vigilance against the virus. The CDC also warned that a fourth wave could be ready to break, sending Americans back into hiding just as things are getting better.

“I’m going to reflect on the recurring feeling I have of impending doom," cautioned CDC director Dr. Rachelle Walensky. "We have so much to look forward to, so much promise and potential of where we are and so much reason for hope, but right now I’m scared.”

On a brighter note, Biden that 90% of American adults will have access to a COVID-19 vaccine by mid-April as the government sends doses to thousands of additional pharmacies nationwide.

  • Air and space: The Biden administration has made two bold initiatives that on the surface seem to add up to a whole lot of nothing -- air and space. But the investments in wind power and space and space regulations could pay real dividends in the future.

On Monday, Biden announced a move toward renewable energy, hoping to ignite offshore windfarm production through investment. The administration’s goal is to generate 30 gigawatts of energy, or 1,000 times the production of the nation's only current windfarm.

Reaching that lofty goal could power 10 million households and preclude 78 million metric tons of carbon emissions. But Biden's plan also calls for the expansion of renewable energy efforts to help boost the economy, with the projects potentially creating millions of jobs.

Biden also confirmed his plans to reconvene the National Space Council, a Trump-era initiative had been in limbo since the president took office. Now Biden hopes to use the measures his predecessor put in place to maintain American dominance in the great beyond.

  • MyPillow talk: If you thought the next time you would see or hear from MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell again would be on a late-night infomercial peddling his latest invention (like maybe MyPajamas), you are mistaken. The creepiest  guy on TV is back in the spotlight.

Lindell, an avid Trump supporter who once proposed the former president to declare martial law to prevent Biden from taking office, took to the right-wing airwaves Monday to make a bold proclamation -- Trump will return to the White House in August, and not for a visit.

“All the evidence I have, everything is going to go before the Supreme Court and the election of 2020 is going bye-bye.” Lindell declared on Steve Bannon's "War Room: Pandemic" podcast. “... It was an attack by other countries...communism coming in. I don’t know what they’re going to do with it after they pull it down.”

Strange how a guy smart enough to make millions selling people something they already have can seem so sleep deprived in politics.

Route canal

It took one week, more than a dozen tug boats, millions of hours of manpower and cost billions of dollars in international trade, but the MV Ever Green is finally freed from the Suez Canal and traffic has resumed.

Workers finally got the right tide and found the right technique to refloat the massive, 200,000-ton cargo ship that spans the length of four football fields. It was big enough to block passage of the Suez Canal after it ran aground last week and prevent traffic to the tune of $400 million an hour.

Using a full moon king tide to help raise the vessel in coordination with heavy machinery and tugs, crews released the Ever Green and opened passage to the vital waterway Monday, but the logjam of traffic that has been waiting for a week will take days to clear and create further delays.

The reopening of the Suez Canal had an immediate impact on the markets as oil prices reversed course and eased down after speculation about supply shortages were alleviated, but consumers can expect to see disappearing stockpiles of certain products, like coffee and toilet paper.

Cicada invasion

If you're under the age of 17, you are in for a surprise. If you're older and have lived through a year of the cicadas, you are in for a nightmare.

Brood X cicadas, an unusual species of insects that only come to the Earth's surface once every 17 years, are due for their return in the coming months across the South and Midwest. Not since 2004 has the U.S. seen the cicada invasion, and this year's crop could be one of the biggest.

Scientists say billions of the bug will start emerging from underground in the coming weeks, causing swarms of car window art and loud, shrill chirping sounds. Some cultures treat the rare treats as a delicacy (try the cicada frittatas), while most consider it a nuisance of the highest order.

“They’re just really big and awkward “... It’s really something to marvel at,” one scientist said of cicadas before striking a more somber tone. “I feel sorry for them, growing up for 17 years, then someone eats them."

The invasion will only last through the summer before they lay their eggs underground and bid humans farewell until 2038. They grow up so fast.

Sweet Mondays

Finding the motivation to get out of bed on Monday mornings just got a whole lot easier thanks to the folks at Krispy Kreme, who are offering patrons a free doughnut and cup of coffee to start their work week.

There are no strings attached (except for a possible strand of glazing on your chin) to the promotion -- simply show up and claim your freebies. The offer, which is good for one glazed doughnut and a medium brewed coffee, is available anytime of day every Monday through May 24.

The generous promotion could be in response to the blow-back Krispy Kreme received last week when it offered a free doughnut to customers who had been vaccinated against COVID-19. Some felt it isolated the unvaccinated, others questioned the wisdom of rewarding healthy behavior with unhealthy food, and at least one gym owner responded by offering free memberships to those who had not been vaccinated.

Extra Krispy

Krispy Kreme doughnuts were once fried in lard and soybean oil before using what as of 2016? Also, at what ironic temperature are they cooked?

(Monday's answer: Famed composer Giuseppe Verdi wrote his opera "Adia" to commemorate the grand opening of the Suez Canal in 1869).
